The women show

To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, Antipode Gallery invites all SHE makes organization to curate a collection of 8 women artists from around the globe: Natacha Di Nucci (Switzerland), Teresa Escobar (Mexico), Nikeeta Lakhiani (Bali), Sandra Lapage (Brazil), Courtney Minor (USA), Petra Schott (Germany), Rita Valley (USA) and Zoe Young (Australia).

Since day one, our mission has been to support underrepresented artists and advocate for a fairer art world. Women have never been treated equally in the art world, and today they remain dramatically underrepresented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. Our perception may have changed, but not the reality.

Some eye-opening facts* :

  • Less than 14% of living artists represented by galleries in Europe and North America are women

  • Of the 3,050 galleries in the Artsy database, 10% represent not a single woman artist, and almost half of them represent only 25% or fewer women

  • Just 11% of all acquisitions and 14% of exhibitions at 26 prominent US museums over the past decade were of work by female artists

  • 96% of artworks sold at auction are by male artists. Works made by women represent only 2% of the global auction sales

  • Women earn 70% of bachelor of fine arts and between 65-75% of master of fine arts degrees in the US, though only 46% of working artists are women.
