About the photo

This photo came out of a place of self-discovery and a renewal of identity. In a place where you’re criminalized for who you are and what you wear, I produced the series Machismo. Stripping the tonality of his skin and the pink durag, I created a series of black and white images to depict how the world sees us as African American men.

About the artist

Donté Maurice (he/him) is a portrait photographer based in Atlanta, USA. He creates intimate connections between viewers and the models of his portraiture work. He is inspired by people of color, body language and intimacy and driven by rejecting stereotypes. His work around black masculinity shows the beauty and strength of Black men in a special way, emphasizing vulnerability and intimacy.
